About SevenoaksThe main town of Sevenoaks is an old market town dating from the 13th century. It is home to the famous Knole House and deer park. In 1456 the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Archbishop Bourchier, purchased the 100 acre estate of Knole and built the great house which lies to the eastern side of the town. This was later appropriated by Henry VIII and then passed on to Queen Elizabeth I who gave it to her cousin Thomas Sackville.
In the great gales of 1987 six of the seven oaks were blown down but new oaks were subsequently planted.
The District Council area also includes the towns of Swanley and Westerham. Westerham is close to Chartwell House the home of Sir Winston Churchill and there is a statue of the great man on The Green at Westerham.
